The Link Between High Blood Sugar and Colon Cancer

Do you have high blood sugar? If so, you’re increasing your risk for a number of chronic diseases – including colon cancer.

High Blood Sugar and Colon Cancer: Elevated Insulin and C-Peptide Increase Cancer Risk

A recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that men with pre-diabetes are more likely to develop colon cancer.

Researchers tested blood samples from approximately 15,000 male doctors for C-peptide, a protein that indicates insulin levels. They found that men with the highest C-peptide levels – and therefore the highest insulin levels – were almost three times more likely to develop colon cancer than men with the lowest C-peptide levels.

Another study published in the April 2006 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention examined the relationship between insulin and the risk of colorectal adenoma – the main precursor to colorectal cancer.

Researchers found that c-peptide, an indicator of insulin secretion, was significantly associated with the risk of colorectal adenoma.

Balance Blood Sugar to Reduce Cancer Risk

Combat colon cancer (and other chronic diseases too) by keeping your blood sugar levels in check with a low glycemic diet that’s rich in healthy fats and moderate in protein. Here are a few more articles to help you learn more:
