If you have been following the Healing Gourmet lifestyle for a while, you know that the basic diet we recommend is one that is low-glycemic and rich in protein and healthy fats.
This is a diet that supports your overall health and helps keep your blood sugar stable. It keeps your hunger in check. It is also the best way I know to reach your ideal weight.
And I recently read yet another study by Donald Layman, Ph.D., which confirms it. Now, if you have not heard of Dr. Layman, I understand. He doesn’t write books. He doesn’t do media interviews. And he doesn’t have a diet named after him.
But what he has done is publish more than 150 peer-reviewed research studies in the medical and nutritional journals. And he is the Professor Emeritus of Nutrition at Illinois State University.
In his work, Dr. Layman has shown – over and over again – that consuming a high-protein, low-glycemic diet leads to weight loss, improved body composition, balanced blood sugar and better blood lipids.
And in the study I just read, he stresses the importance of consuming high quality protein at breakfast. He writes that:
increased use of high quality protein at breakfast may be important for the metabolic advantage of a higher protein diet.
I totally agree. But I also know that it is not always easy to find time to make a high protein breakfast. That is why I love taking whey protein in the mornings.
Is Your Protein Powder Healing… or Harming?
But finding a high quality whey protein supplement isn’t easy. Here are three reasons why:
- Most whey protein supplements are made with lower quality whey concentrate or hydrolyzed whey. And they usually come from cows that are given antibiotics and hormones.
- They are usually heat pasteurized – which destroys many of the health and immune-enhancing properties.
- And almost all commercial whey supplements are sweetened with the health-harming chemicals sucralose and aspartame. No thanks!

But high quality whey protein is a great addition to your healthy diet. Not only does it provide important essential amino acids, it is also believed to be the most thermogenic food known to man… and has also been found to boost glutathione – the body’s “master antioxidant and detoxifier”.
While whirling protein into a smoothie is a simple and quick way to enjoy it, you can also add it to your favorite gluten free pancake recipe (like our Protein Pancakes) or mix into grain-and-gluten-free muffins, cakes, cookies and more.
If you’re interested in adding more quality protein to your diet, or if you’re interested in a healthy and filling way to lose weight and improve your body, be sure to choose a high quality whey protein supplement like Vital Whey or Jay Robb’s.
