What’s the one fare that comes to mind when you think of healthy eating?If you’re like most people, it’s probably salads.

The most important ingredient to consider when making healthy salad dressing recipes is the oils you use.

A high quality extra virgin olive oil is an excellent choice, as are macadamia nut oil and avocado oil. The reason? These oils are rich in monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) – the star ingredient of the Mediterranean diet. Mononsaturated fats help to balance blood sugar, reduce inflammation and even trim unsightly and dangerous belly fat!

But don’t expect to get these healthy fats in bottled salad dressing, restaurant salad dressings or even the so-called healthy salad dressing recipes you’ll find in cookbooks or online.

In fact, most salad dressing are loaded with vegetable oils – like canola, soybean and corn oils –  that promote inflammation and disease.

What’s Wrong With Bottled Salad Dressing?

In addition to unhealthy fats, most bottled salad dressings also contain preservatives, emulsifiers, and refined sugars (yes, sugar!). They might make for a tasty salad, but they’ll harm your health, one tablespoon at a time.

And what about “lite” or “low fat” salad dressings? Made with artificial ingredients, flavorings, and chemicals, these fake foods are toxic and should be avoided at all costs. Healthy salad dressing is made from natural, real ingredients that will contribute to your health, not hurt it.

Think you’re getting something better in a restaurant? Think again. Most restaurants, even high end ones, use commercially prepared dressings. And if they make them “in house”, they still typically include loads of sugar or salt.

The truth is this: If you don’t make it yourself, you don’t know what’s in it.
