Magnesium Deficiency – A Little Known Killer

Not long ago, my 86 year old grandmother was rushed to the hospital. Although she had never had heart problems, she was experiencing shortness of breath, tightness in her chest and palpitations.

The doctors in the ER thought she was having a heart attack. They monitored her vital signs closely, while administering electrolytes by IV. Three days later, my grandmother was released and referred to a cardiologist for further treatment.

    I think magnesium saved my life, too. I just suddenly begin with atrial fibrillation, a heart arrhythmia. It was very hard and painful – I could watch my chest jounce around as my heart flopped. I had no insurance so had to live with this for years. I also had exceedingly painful, long-lasting cramps in my legs, ankles and feet, and my toes would stand straight upright for a while, also very painful.

    I began to research, and joined an A-fib group, and someone there mentioned the importance of magnesium and that people with heart issues were often lacking it, especially since some heart meds leech it out of you. I began adding magnesium and the cramps and toe spasms stopped. It didn’t help my A-fib, but it helped in other ways. By then I had gone into heart failure and was retaining pounds of fluid. I was in bad shape. I could no longer take walks or even get around the grocery store.

    I improved my diet, kept up the magnesium and other supplements, educated myself. Now I don’t retain fluid – I can take long walks and breathe normally! I have to keep it up every day and take a good dose of it, but it is definitely magnesium that turned my world around!
