How Healthy Is Your Protein Powder?
If you have been following the Healing Gourmet lifestyle for a while, you know that the basic diet we recommend is one that is low-glycemic and rich in protein and healthy fats.
This is a diet that supports your overall health and helps keep your blood sugar stable. It keeps your hunger in check. It is also the best way I know to reach your ideal weight.
And I recently read yet another study by Donald Layman, Ph.D., which confirms it. Now, if you have not heard of Dr. Layman, I understand. He doesn’t write books. He doesn’t do media interviews. And he doesn’t have a diet named after him.
But what he has done is publish more than 150 peer-reviewed research studies in the medical and nutritional journals. And he is the Professor Emeritus of Nutrition at Illinois State University.
In his work, Dr. Layman has shown – over and over again – that consuming a high-protein, low-glycemic diet leads to weight loss, improved body composition, balanced blood sugar and better blood lipids.
And in the study I just read, he stresses the importance of consuming high quality protein at breakfast. He writes that:
increased use of high quality protein at breakfast may be important for the metabolic advantage of a higher protein diet.
I totally agree. But I also know that it is not always easy to find time to make a high protein breakfast. That is why I love taking whey protein in the mornings.
Is Your Protein Powder Healing… or Harming?

- Most whey protein supplements are made with lower quality whey concentrate or hydrolyzed whey. And they usually come from cows that are given antibiotics and hormones.
