Healthy Snacks That Nourish Your Body
There are different schools of thought regarding the health benefits of snacking though the day… versus eating three square meals.
But if you do choose to snack, it’s important that you make your snacks as nutritious as possible.
Unfortunately, most “snack” food is pretty unhealthy. Chips fried in unstable omega 6 fats, pretzels made with refined carbs (and rife with cancer-causing acrylamide) and high sugar pudding cups and yogurt that drive up insulin levels might be easy grab-and-go options, but over time, they can add up to extra “padding” and even harm your long-term health.
Healthy Snack Recipes For All
Fortunately, you don’t have to rely on unhealthy processed foods to keep your energy levels up between meals. There are plenty of healthy snack recipes you can enjoy that will stave off hunger while nourishing your body and benefiting your health.
Healthy Snack Ideas That Work
When choosing snacks, it’s important to choose foods that are whole and unprocessed. Foods like nuts – especially macadamia nuts , coconut and almonds – mineral-rich seeds (like pumpkin seeds), high quality oil-packed or fermented olives and low-sugar fruit (especially superfood berries) are superb choices. If you tolerate dairy well, you might also include high-quality, organic, grass-fed cheese or yogurt. Unsweetened coconut yogurt with organic berries is also a great choice for a healthy snack.
Find yourself craving sweet snacks? Don’t reach for a candy bar or most so-called “healthy” energy bars or even whole food bars. They’re little more than sugar (either added sugars or sugar from dried fruit) and filler proteins like soy. Try some of our healthy candy recipes that are low in sugar, high in antioxidants and healthy fats to satisfy your sweet tooth and provide real cellular nutrition.
Making Delicious Healthy Snacks for Kids
And speaking of sweet snacks, who loves sweet snacks more than kids?
Forget store-bought fruit leathers, vitamin-infused sour chews and sugar-packed granola bars (along with processed oat cereals and gold fish crackers!). Set your children up for a lifetime of health and a good relationship with food by providing them with healthy snacks to nourish their growing bodies and brains. Organic celery sticks and almond butter or sunflower seed butter or sliced organic strawberries and coconut yogurt dip are great options (learn about the importance of protecting your kids from pesticides here).
