For many people, few things come close to the enjoyment of a good brownie. With their chewy-crisp edges and gooey chocolaty center, even restrained food lovers have difficulty resisting indulging in a few (or the whole pan!) from time to time. Unfortunately, what makes GOOD brownies so delicious is their high starch and sugar content. It is baking chemistry at its finest as the sugar … [Read more...]

Who doesn’t love a little something sweet after a meal, or enjoy a cookie to ease the stress of a rough day?
While no one wants to live life without desserts, we all know the damage that too many can do to our bodies.
In fact, sugar-laden desserts contribute to weight gain, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and even Alzheimer’s disease.
You see, your blood sugar is directly linked to your risk of nearly every chronic disease. And when you don’t make a conscious effort to reduce the sugar in your diet – whether it be from a piece of cake, a snack of cookies or even fruit – it is all too easy to consume a high sugar diet that drives up blood sugar and insulin levels, promotes inflammation, increases triglyceride levels and even speeds the physical signs of aging through the formation of AGEs.
Healthy Dessert Recipes DO Exist!
But here’s the good news: You CAN enjoy healthy dessert recipes that will satisfy your sweet tooth and provide your body with nutrients that will actually work for your health… not against it.
All-Natural Sugar-Free Desserts
One of the biggest problems with creating healthy dessert recipes is that one of the main ingredients in dessert recipes is sugar (and usually refined, processed sugars at that). And because of this, many “healthy” desserts contain artificial sweeteners as a replacement.
But studies have shown that while artificial sweeteners may not contain calories or sugar, they are worse for your health. In fact, many common artificial sweeteners can cause a lessening of A1C control (a measure of blood sugar over time), an imbalance of healthy gut flora, free radical damage and many other harmful health effects.
That’s why our dessert recipes don’t use artificial sweeteners. Instead we rely on all-natural, low glycemic sweeteners such as stevia, erythritol, (with small amounts of palm sugar or molasses) to sweeten up your healthy dessert recipes without adding chemicals or calories that negatively impact your blood sugar and hormones.
Creamy, Delicious Dairy-Free Desserts
And what about using dairy to create healthy dessert recipes?
While raw and fermented dairy products from grass-fed cows (and goats and sheep) have many beneficial health effects, processed dairy products are another story altogether. Beneficial enzymes and nutrients are lost, and processing changes dairy proteins into a more allergenic and inflammatory form.
But you can still create creamy, silky and rich desserts… that are 100% dairy free!
By using heart healthy coconut milk or almond milk, not only will you avoid allergenic dairy, but you’ll also get the benefits of the healthy fats – including medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) and monounsaturated fats – in your diet.
Gluten-Free Desserts: All of the Goodness, None of the Grain
Next on the list of common (and unhealthy!)dessert recipe ingredients: wheat flour.
Like it or not, grains are plain bad for your body. In fact, wheat flour raises your blood sugar just as much as table sugar does. What’s more, wheat and other grains promote low-grade inflammation in the body that’s associated with almost every chronic disease. (Learn about the glycemic index and glycemic load of common foods here)
But here’s the good news. You can create delicious gluten free desserts – without a gram of grain – using high protein nut flours, coconut flour and other “intelligent ingredients”.
Low Carb Desserts
But unlike most store-bought gluten free desserts, you won’t find rice flours or other starchy, high carb ingredients in our healthy dessert recipes. While these desserts are free of gluten, they still contain all of the blood-sugar spiking carbohydrates in refined form as their traditional counterparts. In fact, many people gain weight on a gluten free diet for this very reason!
Learn how you can create delicious, healthy dessert recipes using low glycemic sweeteners, gluten free, low glycemic flours and other healthy natural ingredients that will turn your dessert into one of the healthiest parts of your meal!
