Obesity & Diabetes: The Leptin Link

How this hormone affects fat storage

by Kelley Herring

New findings may help to better explain the link between obesity and diabetes. And the link lies in a hormone.

A study published in Cell Metabolism found that leptin -a hormone known for its role in appetite and weight gain -regulates blood sugar through two different brain-body pathways. One that controls fat storage and appetite, and another that signals the liver and tells it how to handle glucose reserves.

While researchers have known that low leptin leads to obesity which increases diabetes risk, this new study shows that it may take disruptions in both of the brain-body pathways to bring on full-blown diabetes.
