Go Organic, Get More Flavonoids

Friendlier farming increases antioxidants

by Kelley Herring

Research studies continue to mount on the beneficial effects of organic produce. Not only do you avoid many of the toxic pesticides that "conventionally" grown produce, but new studies suggest you also boost your intake of health-boosting nutrients.

A recent study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry found that corn grown without the use of chemical pesticides had almost 60% more flavonoids compared to the corn grown with pesticide.

Researchers believe that flavonoids are the plant's natural protection against pests. When produce is grown with pesticides, the plant has less need for it's own defenses and therefore produces less flavonoids. However, produce grown organically has to produce more flavonoids to protect itself from pests, fungi and other potentially harmful organisms.

Choose organically grown produce picked at it's seasonal peak. You'll boost your intake of health-promoting antioxidants, maximize flavor and reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.
