Cancer Snapshot: Find Protection on Your Plate

Most prevalent cancers linked to diet

The American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund estimate that 30-40% of all cancers can be prevented with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, coupled with physical activity and maintenance of appropriate body weight.

Hormone-dependent cancers - including breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer - have been found to be closely associated with diet. These cancers also make up the vast majority of all cancer diagnoses and account for more than 120,000 deaths per year.

New Cases of Hormone-Dependent Cancers
Breast cancer diagnoses (2002): 181,646
Colorectal cancer diagnoses (2003): 139,534
Prostate cancer diagnoses (2002): 190,096

Cut Prostate Cancer Risk by 48%

The Physicians’ Health Study evaluated more than 20,000 men and found that those eating this food five times a week had a 48% lower chance of death from prostate cancer than the men who ate less than one weekly serving.
