Canola oil... friend or foe?
Let's start from the beginning. There is no such thing as a "canola" plant. The name canola is a hybrid of "Canada" and "oil". The product itself comes from the rapeseed plant - a member of the brassica family. And while it does contain the lowest level of saturated fat of any other oil, it is one of the crops on the GMO watch list. In fact, 80% of the canola grown in Canada has now been modified using biotechnology, according to the Canola Council.
Choose healthier cold pressed, monounsaturated rich oils like almond oil, macadamia nut oil, extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil.
Culinary Caution! Unpure canola oil may contain a small amount of grain protein and is not recommended for those with Celiac disease or those who are on a gluten-free diet. Canola oil contains vitamin K. One tablespoon provides 25% of the daily allowance and should be used with caution for those on blood thinning medications.
